Servants of the Gospel is a collection of essays by American bishops on their role as shepherds in the Church today. Written in anticipation of the Synod of Bishops scheduled for the Year 2000 to discuss the very topic, these essays are geared toward helping all people understand the unique and challenging task of the successors of the apostles. This timely work is specifically designed to foster lay cooperation with bishops as the Church continues Christ’s mission into the third Christian millennium.

Contributing authors of Servants of the Gospel include Cardinal Francis George, O.M.I.; Archbishops Raymond L. Burke, Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., and James P. Keleher; and Bishops Robert J. Carlson, Thomas J. Tobin, John J. Myers, James S. Sullivan, and Fabian W. Bruskewitz.

Endorsements

“The topic Pope John Paul II has chosen for the next Synod of Bishops is ‘The Bishop: Servant of the Gospel for the Hope of the World.’ The bishops who have contributed their reflections to this volume speak from their profound pastoral experience. All who read them will be better prepared to understand the significance of the Synod.”

—Most Rev. Joseph A. Fiorenza, Bishop of Galveston-Houston
