Through a typological, or symbolic, reading of Scripture, Sean Innerst illustrates the “mystical identity” shared between Mary and the Church. Various figures in Scripture, such as the woman in Revelation 12, can simultaneously represent Mary and the Church, since one symbol many be interpreted in multiple non-contradicting ways. Innerst finishes by showing that Mary has a unique role, as the first Christian, in guiding the Church to give glory to God.
