Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M., Cap., Episcopal Advisor to The St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology, is the 13th Bishop and 9th Archbishop of Philadelphia appointed by Pope Benedict XVI. Prior to that he was appointed by Pope John Paul II to serve as head of the Archdiocese of Denver, Colorado in 1997. He was Bishop of Rapid City, South Dakota, a post he had held since 1988.
Ordained to the priesthood in 1970, he is a member of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin. He holds advanced degrees in Theology and Religious Education and has served as an instructor in theology and as a seminary spiritual director. Prior to being ordained Bishop of Rapid City, he held posts as Vicar Provincial, and Chief Executive for the Capuchin Province of Mid-America.
