About Monsignor Michael Heinz and the Letter & Spirit Award
The St. Paul Center’s Letter & Spirit Award is our highest honor, given only to those scholars whose lives and work dramatically advance our mission: to renew the Church through biblical scholarship that is both rigorously academic and ardently pastoral, awakening in priests, scholars, and the faithful a deeper love for Christ and His Word.
The Center is proud to honor Monsignor Michael Heintz, a priest of the Diocese of Fort Wayne–South Bend with the Letter & Spirit Award. A Notre Dame doctoral alumnus (2008) and longtime formator of priests—first as dean at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg and now as Director of the Marten Program in Homiletics and Liturgics—he has spent his ministry steeped in Latin and Greek Patristics and the great Ressourcement thinkers, especially Louis Bouyer and Jean Daniélou. His research, his preaching, and his service on the editorial board of the Fathers of the Church Series and as a consultant to the USCCB Committee on Doctrine all flow from the same conviction: the future of Catholic theology and preaching lies in a joyful return to the sources of Scripture and Tradition.
