Don’t Fall for Politicizing the Bible

Why should anyone worry about the history of Scripture scholarship, especially reaching all the way back to the early fourteenth century?  

The simple answer is that our peculiar situation today—in which priests, preachers, and people in the pews study the Bible as the inspired Word of God and academic Scripture scholars in universities study the Bible as an ancient book of mythology—is the result of the history of Scripture scholarship. We are searching for the reasons for this Great Divide, and that means searching for its ultimate origins.

Mary: The Promised Mother

All through the history of the Davidic kingdom, the Queen Mother occupied a place second only to the king. In Hebrew, she was called Gebirah, meaning “Great Lady.” Her duties included advising the king as no one else could and interceding for the people before the king. She also was a visible sign of the king’s legitimate rule. That’s because she wasn’t just the king’s mother, she was also the former king’s wife. Her motherhood of the king was a testimony to his descent from the previous king.

Saint John admonishes us to deal forthrightly with our sin: “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
