God created you and me for a purpose. Our destiny is not based on our talents, skills, abilities, gifts, education, wealth or health, though these may be useful. God’s plan for our lives is based on God’s grace and our response to him. All that we have is a gift from God. What we are is a gift back to him.  

When a man and a woman discern the vocation of marriage, they move from a private promise to each other—I am my beloved’s, and he is mine—to a public engagement.

Our civilization is crumbling from within, and one of the reasons is no-fault divorce. Many celebrities seem to mock marriage, with multiple extravagant weddings, tabloid-reported affairs and public court battles for custody of children. Perhaps their struggle is greater than the average person’s, as they try to balance fame, demanding careers and their private lives. Nevertheless, what started in Hollywood forty years ago is the norm today in many communities.

The word for “jewels” in Hebrew refers to something very costly, like rubies or pearls. Proverbs 31 tells us that these pale in comparison to the value of a godly wife. In Matthew 13:45-46 Jesus tells us about a man who searches for fine pearls.

The first two chapters of Luke’s Gospel are widely cherished among Bible readers. The Bible, which once seemed to me a collection of loosely related stories, actually fits together to tell a divine love story—an unmatched masterpiece telling the tale of God’s inexhaustible love for His children. The Good Book is really our family history book, telling us how our beloved Father, throughout all of history, has sought to save the lost and unite His family forever in their heavenly home.
